FPL mobilizes crews ahead of Helene, tells customers to prepare for outages

The latest: Florida Power & Light Company’s (FPL) is ready to respond as Helene approaches the state. FPL has assembled a restoration workforce of thousands and is pre-positioning crews, equipment and supplies to restore power safely and as quickly as possible. Regardless of where Helene makes landfall, customers throughout the state could see some impact from the severe weather leading to power interruptions. Those in the storm’s path should prepare for widespread, extended power outages.

Why it matters: Hurricane and tropical storm watches and warnings are in effect across most of Florida and 61 counties are now under a state of emergency. The storm is forecast to become a major hurricane and bring devastating winds, rain, flooding and dangerous storm surge with impacts being felt as early as tomorrow morning. Customers should finalize their preparations and prioritize safety.

We have a restoration workforce strategically positioned and ready to restore power quickly. We will not stop until every customer is restored.”  

What FPL is doing:

  • Assembling a restoration workforce of thousands.
  • Pre-positioning restoration personnel, supplies and equipment to support restoration efforts. 
  • Opening staging, parking and processing sites throughout the state to help speed restoration.

What customers should do before the storm:

  • Safety is always FPL’s first priority. Customers should make it their top priority as they finalize their personal preparations.
  • Don’t trim trees – high winds can turn branches into dangerous, flying debris.
  • Follow the advice of federal, state and local authorities. This is especially important for people living in low-lying areas and manufactured homes who may face additional challenges during a severe weather event.
  • Customers dependent on electric-powered, life-sustaining medical equipment, should finalize their family emergency plan for backup power.

What to expect in the immediate aftermath of the storm: As soon as it is safe to do so, FPL will begin the restoration process while field crews complete a full damage assessment. During this time, customers should keep safety top of mind after Helene. Stay far away from downed power lines and if using a generator, make sure to follow the manufacturers’ instructions. Finally, keep in mind, streets and neighborhoods are likely to experience downed trees, flooding and other damage that could delay restoration efforts.
