JUNO BEACH, Fla. – NextEra Energy, Inc., has been named to the 2011 Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) of the leading companies in North America for corporate sustainability. The Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index selects the top 20 percent of companies in sustainability performance from the 600 largest companies in North America.

"We are very pleased to be named for the third consecutive year to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. I want to thank the 15,000 employees of the NextEra Energy companies for their relentless pursuit of excellence and their commitment to the continuous, incremental improvements required to achieve true sustainability," said NextEra Energy Chairman and CEO Lew Hay.

The corporate sustainability assessments on which this year’s Dow Jones Sustainability Index was based included more than 100 economic, environmental and social variables, with a focus on industry-specific criteria that have a material impact on companies’ ability to generate long-term value. Topics evaluated included corporate governance, risk and crisis management, customer relationship management, transmission and distribution reliability, generation mix, water management, human capital development, corporate citizenship, and safety.

The evaluation conducted to select sustainability leaders “is continuously adapted to capture the sustainability trends that are at the forefront of each industry sector and that are likely to have an impact on the companies’ competitive landscape,” according to Sustainable Asset Management, the investment research firm that conducts the DJSI research. “What may have been cutting edge in the past may have now become standard practice, and new sustainability opportunities and challenges continue to develop over time.”

Among its other recognitions, NextEra Energy in 2011 is ranked as one of the top 10 companies worldwide for social responsibility by Fortune magazine and No. 1 on the Fortune “World’s Most Admired Companies” list in its sector for the fifth year in a row. Earlier this year, NextEra Energy was listed as one of World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere magazine, one of just 24 companies worldwide to be listed for five straight years.
