JUNO BEACH, Fla. – Florida Power & Light Company is restoring service safely and as quickly as possible to customers affected by Tropical Storm Elsa. Customers on Florida’s west coast and throughout the state are feeling the initial effects of Elsa’s severe weather bands. Elsa is expected to bring heavy rain and the potential for storm surge and isolated tornados across the state today and tomorrow.
“After preparing extensively throughout the holiday weekend for Tropical Storm Elsa, our restoration workforce is responding to outages as they occur and following the path of the storm,” said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL. “These brave men and women will continue to work in between bands of severe weather as long as it is safe to do so, and they won’t stop until everyone’s lights are back on. It’s important to remember that you don’t need to be in the direct path of the storm to be affected, so don’t fall into the trap of fixating on the storm’s forecast cone. Elsa’s outer bands of severe weather can cause trees, vegetation and flying debris to fall or blow into power lines and create restoration challenges.”
FPL has more than 7,000 personnel dedicated to the effort, including personnel that came from out of state to help speed restoration.
Customers are urged to prepare for outages, including the possibility of more than one outage, as severe weather bands move through. Following severe weather, our crews must cut away trees and other vegetation to find and fix damage safely and as quickly as possible.
Immediately after a storm, we know if main power lines have been damaged. If customers believe their power is out for this reason, there is no need to contact us. Customers should call 911 or FPL at 1-800-4OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243) only to report dangerous situations such as downed power lines or sparking electrical equipment. Customers can report an outage at FPL.com/Outage or on the FPL app.
