FPL Group names Edward Tancer as General Counsel

JUNO BEACH, Fla. -- FPL Group, Inc. (NYSE: FPL) announced today the appointment of Edward Tancer to serve as vice president and general counsel of the corporation (FPL Group). Tancer, previously served as vice president and general counsel of FPL Energy, the wholesale power generating subsidiary of FPL Group. He succeeds Dennis Coyle who is retiring after 15 years as general counsel for the company.

Tancer, a 17-year veteran of the company, has served in various legal posts including senior attorney of FPL and general counsel of FPL Energy. He also has served since 2003 as associate general counsel of the corporation. In these posts, he acquired extensive knowledge of the entire range of legal matters affecting the company.

"We are delighted to appoint Ed to this important post," said Lew Hay, FPL Group chairman and CEO. "For nearly ten years, Ed has provided strong legal guidance to FPL Energy as it grew from a passive owner of a small portfolio of power generating assets to one of the most respected and profitable wholesale generation businesses in the nation. At the same time, Ed has served as associate general counsel to the corporation, managing a variety of corporate governance matters and leading a team of attorneys that address a myriad of issues for all FPL Group businesses. His legal expertise, leadership skills and strong business acumen will help our company continue to be successful in the increasingly complex business environment in which we operate."

Tancer, 43, holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Florida and a law degree from the same institution.

Dennis Coyle will retire this spring. Before joining the company in 1989, Coyle provided legal advice and counsel as a partner of the Steel Hector & Davis law firm headquartered in Miami. His first major involvement was the formation of FPL Group in 1984 to be the holding company for FPL and its new businesses, such as FPL Energy. Thereafter, while still at Steel Hector and until officially joining the company, he functioned as the company's outside general counsel.

"Dennis helped put in place many of the corporate governance principles that have served our company well, ensuring that we remain a company that is on the leading edge in our governance policies and practices. I have appreciated his advice and counsel on a variety of legal and business matters and will miss his keen intellect and business savvy," said Hay.
