Statement by FPL Group Chairman and CEO Lew Hay on Copenhagen climate talks
Dec 21, 2009

JUNO BEACH, Fla. – Lew Hay, chairman and CEO of FPL Group, the nation’s No. 1 producer of renewable energy from wind and solar power, issued the following statement today on the recently concluded international climate talks held in Copenhagen, Denmark:

"I commend President Obama for showing real leadership in the effort to mitigate global carbon emissions. Copenhagen represents one step of many toward an ultimate goal. With the summit's conclusion, we can now focus on the policy changes we need to make here at home. The Environmental Protection Agency is going to regulate greenhouse gas emissions whether there’s an international agreement or not. We think legislative action is far superior; so does the Administration. The House of Representatives has already acted. Now, we need the Senate to act. The bottom line is this: Taking action to address carbon emissions will generate clean-energy jobs, strengthen our energy independence and improve the environment. If we cling to the failed policies of the past, we’ll fall behind in clean energy, remain overly dependent on foreign sources of fuel and further damage the environment.”
