FPL Group, Inc. recognized in Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World

JUNO BEACH, Fla. -- FPL Group, Inc. announced today that it has been recognized on the first, annual list of Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World. FPL Group, Inc. is one of only 100 companies chosen from 2000 of the world’s largest corporations whose sustainability performance falls within the top five percent of their business sector. The company is part of a select group of only 20 U.S.-based companies included in this special recognition. FPL Group was selected based on its ability to manage the triple bottom line – society, environment and economy.

“FPL Group companies recognize that to ensure shareholder value creation over the long term, we must also succeed in meeting our environmental and social responsibilities,” said Lewis Hay, III, president and chief executive officer of FPL Group, Inc. “We believe that sensitivity to the natural environment and excellent business performance can work together, hand-in-hand.”

The companies recognized in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World represent large global indices such as the S&P 500, MSCI World, FTSE 350 and Eurostoxx. Companies were rated on criteria such as strategic governance, environmental initiatives, and human capital/labor relations practices.

The goal of the Global 100 is to reinforce, raise awareness and highlight corporations open to leading the way to a more sustainable world. Canadian corporate social responsibility magazine, Corporate Knights, sponsored the list, based on sustainability ratings from Innovest Strategic Value Advisors.

“FPL Group is a leader among large power companies in pushing forward an evolving standard of self-enlightened environmental awareness that will better serve shareholders over the long-term,” says Toby Heaps, editor of Corporate Knights.

In addition to this most recent honor, FPL Group is the winner of a Platt’s 2003 Global Energy Award as “Renewable Company of the Year” for the company’s clean energy portfolio. Last year, FPL Group’s major subsidiary, Florida Power & Light Co. was named a Tree Line USA utility by the Arbor Day Foundation.

FPL leads the nation in energy management and conservation programs. Over the past two decades, more than 1.7 million customers have participated in these programs, helping to reduce electricity demand equivalent to 10 power plants. FPL is one of the cleanest utilities in the U.S. with overall emissions rates that are among the lowest in the industry.

FPL Energy, an FPL Group company, has a large portfolio of renewable sources of power including the largest solar project in the U.S. in the Mojave Desert.

FPL Group, with annual revenues of more than $10 billion, is nationally known as a high quality, efficient, and customer-driven organization focused on energy-related products and services. With a growing presence in 26 states, it is widely recognized as one of the country's premier power companies.
